When Are You Entitled to Delayed Flight Compensation in Georgia?

You may qualify for compensation for a delayed flight if several conditions are met:

1

Arrival Time

A delay of three hours or more doesn’t automatically entitle you to compensation. The delay is measured by arrival at your final destination.

2

Flight Route

It matters where your flight departed from, where it landed, and which airline operated it.

3

Reason for the Disruption

In extraordinary circumstances, such as bad weather, compensation may not be paid. However, the airline must substantiate the reason for the delay.

Amounts

How Much Can You Claim, and How Is the Delay Measured?

Eligibility for flight delay compensation depends on when you arrive at your final destination. You must arrive at least three hours later than scheduled. Before submitting a claim, the circumstances of the delay need to be reviewed: in some cases, the airline is not required to pay compensation.

Example

Suppose you booked a connecting flight and the first leg was delayed. If you still had enough time to catch your next flight and reached your final destination on time, you would not be entitled to delayed flight compensation.

The amount of flight compensation depends on the distance, route, reason for the disruption, and applicable regulations.

€250
Up to 1,500 km
€400
1,500–3,500 km
€600
Over 3,500 km

!

Delayed flight compensation is separate from a ticket refund. If departure is delayed by at least five hours, you may choose not to continue your trip and request a ticket refund, subject to the applicable conditions.

At the airport

What Are Your Rights While Waiting at the Airport?

Passenger rights during a flight delay extend beyond cash compensation. Depending on how long you wait and the distance of your flight, the airline may also be required to provide assistance.

Meals and Communication

Depending on the flight distance and the length of the delay, you may be entitled to free food, drinks, and access to communication services.

Hotel and Transportation

If an overnight stay becomes necessary, the airline may be required to arrange transportation and a hotel or other overnight accommodation.

i

Your right to assistance at the airport is separate from your right to claim cash compensation for a flight delay. Receiving one does not automatically rule out the other.

→

If your flight never took place, you may be entitled to canceled flight compensation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Must a Flight Be Delayed to Qualify for Compensation?

Your flight must arrive at your final destination at least three hours late. Whether or not you’re entitled to delayed flight compensation depends on the reason for the disruption and the applicable regulations.

Is the Delay Measured at Departure or Arrival?

For compensation purposes, what matters is when you arrive at your final destination. For connecting flights, it also matters whether the flights were booked under a single reservation and how late you arrived at your final destination. If a delay on your first flight caused you to miss your connection, you may have a delayed flight compensation claim even if the connecting flight itself arrived on time. The delay is measured up to the moment an aircraft door opens and passengers are allowed to get off.

Can I Claim Compensation for a Flight Delayed by Bad Weather?

Severe weather conditions may qualify as an extraordinary circumstance. However, the reason must always be substantiated by the airline. An objective assessment must determine if the airline could have avoided the disruption, whether the steps it took to prevent or reduce the delay were sufficient, and if it offered passengers possible alternatives.
